“Steampunk is… a joyous fantasy of the past, allowing us to revel in a nostalgia for what never was. It is a literary playground for adventure, spectacle, drama, escapism and exploration. But most of all it is fun!” – George Mann, British author and editor
Steampunk and Square Dancing both share respect for the past with a fascination for the future. This is why the 38th Illinois Square Dance Convention (ILSDC) committee is pleased to showcase Steampunk as the theme for our triumphant return to dancing in July 2024, in Rosemont, Illinois.
What, you ask, is Steampunk? Picture a world where steam power reigns supreme, airships soar through the sky and intricate clockwork machinery fuels astonishing adventures. Steampunk blends history, science fiction, and imagination into one quirky package. Think Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days crossed with the Wild West attitude. Steampunk favors a vintage approach to form and function, in which gears, gaslights, flight goggles and Neo-Victorian outfits will transport you into a fantastical past.
Looking ahead to the upcoming ILSDC, taking place July 19-20, 2024, dancers who choose to will be transported to a fantastical weekend of square dancing, Steampunk style.
